Cheesy Marmite Sausage Rolls

Marmite. You either love it or hate it. I am yet to meet a person that feels indifferent about it. So if you're not a marmite fan, quit now as this recipe probably won't be for you.

There's something quite comforting about a sausage roll. Chris' mum makes the absolute best, sadly I don't have the recipe (yet!), and is famous round Sedgley for them. Yup. Black Country folk love them. So as I've been feeling a little bit poorly, and the weather has suddenly turned freezing, I decided comfort food was in order. Specifically, a freshly baked sausage roll.

But I also wanted marmite. I remember when I was little, marmite used to be one of my comforts. Marmite on buttery toast was always a winner, and the smell wafting through the house, usually with my Dad saying "eugh, yuck" makes me smile, so I think it's fair to say I was craving it when this idea popped into my head.

Feel free to adjust the amount of marmite used in the sausage mix to suit your taste, as I appreciate it's quite a strong flavour. The 2 tsp in the recipe does give quite a strong taste, so if you want it a little subtler then I'd recommend perhaps only 1 to 1.5.

Cheese and Marmite Sausage Rolls

Makes approx. 14 sausage rolls

1 small red onion, finely chopped
375g sausage meat
1 tsp dried sage
2 tsp marmite
50g cheddar cheese, grated
1 sheet of ready rolled puff pastry
1 egg, beaten
salt & pepper


Preheat the oven to 180c and line a baking tray with baking paper.

In a bowl mix together the sausage meat, red onion, sage and season with salt and pepper until everything is well combined.

Add the marmite and mix that so it's incorporated into the meat.

On a lightly floured surface take the ready rolled puff pastry and divide down the middle so you're left with two long rectangles.

Place the marmite-sausage mix down the middle in a long line of each rectangle of puff pastry, moulding with your hands so it is even and level.

Top the sausage mix with grated cheese, then brush one edge of the pastry with egg. Fold the other edge of pastry over the meat mixture and then use a fork to press down and seal the edges. Brush the top and edges with more beaten egg.

Cut into bitesize sausage roll pieces (roughly 7 per rectangle), then place on the baking tray. Bake in the hot oven for 25-30 minutes.

Tuck in straight away, they are delicious warm straight from the oven!

  12. My family hate marmite but as they don't know what is in it they love them and want more making.
    They add that more meaty taste and make them perfect.
